Pint Talking

Apr 19, 2023

In this episode Bob and I talk about yet another great lager style beer. This week it is the American/International Amber lager. A widely available, sessionable craft beer style that showcases both malt and hops. Amber lagers are a medium-bodied lager with a toasty or caramel-like malt character. Hop bitterness can range from very low to medium-high. Brewers may use decoction mash and dry-hopping to achieve advanced flavors.

Style examples:

Examples of this style:

1.     Rhinegeist Brewery – Antelope

2.     Dos Equis – Amber

3.     Terrestrial Brewing -  Erie Dusk

ABV: 4.5-6.0%

IBUs: 8-25

Color: 6-14

Serving Temp: For darker lagers, like Vienna-style, Oktoberfest or Marzen-style lagers, and amber lagers, you’ll want to go slightly warmer, in the 45 to 50 range. Stronger lagers, like a dunkel or doppelbock, would do well at 50.

Serving Pressure: 10-14 PSI

Drink representative selection of the week: GLBC Eliot Ness Amber Lager 6.1% and 27 IBU.

Beer as described by brewer: Admittedly, it’s a bit of a paradox to name our Amber Lager for history’s most famous agent of prohibition. But it’s a smooth, malty (and dare we say, arresting?) paradox.
